This mysterious Middle English carol or hymn (also known as 'The Falcon Carol') has its earliest known notation in a manuscript dated 1504, found by apprentice grocer Richard Hill. The song survives in the folk tradition as 'Down in Yon Forest'. Many theories coexist as to the meaning of this song. We like the one that suggests it is Mary Magdalen's lament for her dead beloved...
