The Arms of the Ash

by Rowan : Morrison

/

about

A song inspired by the M R James ghost story The Ash Tree, and the 1970s David Rudkin BBC adaptation in the Ghost Stories for Christmas strand.
The song is taken from the shortly forthcoming album Lost in Seaburgh, an album of songs inspired by the ghost stories of M R James.

(Oh the ash tree)

We’re all alone ‘neath the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Heads held high ‘neath the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Never shalt die ‘neath the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Return as we will to the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)

Forever to swing ‘neath the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
No one is free in the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
All you can see is the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Return as we will to the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)

For the ash tree calls you here

Nothing can grow here curs-ed be the land
The seeds that carry fear broadcast by the man
Gather up your lanterns to burn this evil down
We’ll never be free whilst its roots are in the ground
All for the re-ei-eign of the Ash tree

(Oh the ash tree)

Hang-ed we’ll be midst the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Was ever to be with the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Cut them all down from the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Return as we will to the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)

Lost be their souls ‘neath the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Curs-ed you be by the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Nothing we’ll sow neath the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)
Returned to the soil be the arms of the ash (Oh the ash tree)

Nothing can grow here curs-ed be the land
The seeds that carry fear broadcast by the man
Gather up your lanterns to burn this evil down
We’ll never be free whilst its roots are in the ground
All for the re-ei-ei-ei-ei- ei ei-gn of the Ash tree

"Bewitching and otherworldly... Morrison's voice is eerily confiding, strangely present, insistent even at its quietest" Folk Radio UK.

Believing in the beauty of sad songs, weaving folk, soul and beat sounds of the '60s into a tapestry of the human heart. Homespun sounds that reside in a nostalgic universe.
